SHORT TALES OF WIDE WONDER

Whilst they may last but scant moments, but like a flaming fire, their image lingers....

I

ALONE

DRAGONS' DOOM

DRAGON WHO NEVER DIES

AMIDST THE HIGHLANDS

I ALONE
OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
Said to the King, not to go there, Sire!
For it would be under fields of fire.
OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
Did I not say we should be sending in spies?
And to be watching in our own court for lies?

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
Bid my troops a store of water keep,
For in the desert there was not a seep.

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
When they came to it not to drink from that creek,
But they did, and from pain grown men did weep

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
Flogged any man on watch found asleep,
Some didn't and of out stores thieves pilfered deep

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
I cared for my men like sheperds do their sheep,
And for lack of trust other regiments were weak

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
Shares of treasure mine were spent on armour,
Others wasted money on uniforms and bed warmers

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
In the battle, I surveyed all from my saddle,
Many preffered to get drunk and addled

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
My forces careful husband, against the foes be-turbaned,
Others sent them in uncaring, they were murdered

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
No walls did scale, let the siege engines wail,
Many on those heights sure did fail

OF THEM ALL, I ALONE
Made sure that as we sailed,
We took away all that wasn't damn well nailed!

DRAGON'S DOOM
And when the great winds blew, and clouds flew from the face of the moon,
All men knew that the last of the dragons would come soon.

And under him their lands would drown in fire and death's screaming sound.

For long had they forgotten they lived in the round, and had stolen treasures from under barrow mound.

And their cries of lament fell on deaf ears, for the dragon knew well their fears, but still it shed tears, for they had never learned, that all was one, and by their own hand this doomsday was now being done....

DRAGON WHO NEVER DIES
(to tune of Lenny Kravitz's song "Fly Away")
I FLY WAY UP IN THE SKY! SO VERY HIGH!
I SEE ALL, YOUR FOOLISH MORTAL LIES!
SINCE THE STARS WERE BORN,
H-E-R-E I A-M!

I WANT THE MAGIC BACK! BEFORE WE ALL DIE!
YOU HAVE KILLED ALL MY KIND,
NO MORE DO WE COME TO YOUR MIND!
YOU SEE ME NOT, WRAPPED IN SORCERY!
AND WHEN I DIE, ALL MAGIC DIES!
I DIE BECAUSE THE MAGIC DIES!
YOU DON'T REALIZE,
WHAT YOU'VE DONE!

YOU'VE BLOTTED OUT THE VERY SUN!
MADE THE BLOOD IN RIVERS RUN!
STILL YOU HAVEN'T DONE!
NOT THE KILLING,
BUT YOUR LACK OF HOPE,
NO DREAMS, SOULS UNWILLING!
I WANT TO FLY AWAY!
I WANT TO GET AWAY!

BUT I AM YOU, YOU ARE ME!
LIFT MY SOUL AGAIN!
LET THE DRAGONS SOAR! TO HEAR OUR ROARS!
WE CAN OPEN THE DIMENSION DOORS!
KNOW ANCIENT LORE,
WHO COULD EVER ASK FOR MORE?
AMIDST THE HIGHLANDS
Ice rimmed, frost shattered and glacier-worn ancient mountain top,
Sintering white, then sudden crimson shadow of dragon as from height it drops,
Glaring carmine 'midst snow and clouds, like blood froze hard,
Scales sunlight sparkling, not even by enchanted steel marred,
With graceful, yet frightening speed, banking right as it dives a thousand yards,
Slicing through air like razored knife, hurtling down as if a falling slate,
A scream of tortured shattering metal, frightful noise makes giants quake!
No matter what or whom, all feel the calling, all love the wonder of the flying drake.....
